The Model 2001 is the much refined, commercialized version of the OC/EC analyzer used at Desert Research Institute for the U.S. EPA’s visibility assessment program “Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE)”. It was developed with key features to facilitate particulate carbon research as well as analytical production. Some of the features like dual modes of pyrolysis monitoring, automatic boat inlet, and MS ACCESS, do increase the cost of the analyzer. But the resulting product is unmatched by other analyzers. An automatic sample loader, due to be released in late 2007 will work in conjunction with the automatic boat inlet to process up to 18 samples sequentially unattended. The analyzer designated as Model 2001A can be fitted with the automated sample loader at any time subsequent to the initial purchase.

The miniature diffusion size classifier (or miniDiSC for short) is a new instrument for nanoparticle measurement. It was designed with ease of use in mind - it is truly handheld, operates without working fluids or radioactive sources, operates in any orientation and on-the-go. It can be used for personal exposure monitoring or quick walk-through surveys of an area of interest, such as a workplace, or an urban area with heavy traffic. Its concentration detection limit is ideally suited for typical ambient particle concentrations. The miniDiSC is less accurate than traditional aerosol instruments such as CPC (condensation particle counter) and SMPS (scanning mobility particle sizer), available from e.g. TSI or Grimm, but this is often more than compensated for by its smaller size and easier handling. In general, measured concentrations and average diameters agree to within 30% with CPC and SMPS. Compared to its main competitor (the handheld CPC) it is smaller, easier to use and also delivers an average particle diameter and lung-deposited surface area and not only the particle number concentration. The handheld CPC is better suited when only number concentration is of interest, and when particle concentrations are below 1'000 per ccm.

Applications

The miniDiSC is ideally suited for all measurements where accuracy is not quite as important as ease of use. Its number concentration range is approximately 1'000 - 1'000'000 particles/ccm, which covers typical ambient particle levels (but not clean-room particle levels). We can customize it with less sensitive electrometers to measure higher particle concentrations if necessary, such as can occur in workplace settings. The miniDiSC can only size particles smaller than about half a micron correctly, and is thus not suited for microparticles. Typical applications of the miniDiSC are

Technicians load the input silos with filters placed in individual carriers and activate FWS, which controls the unit and weighs each filter according to administrator selected instructions. The Aerosol Fluorescence Sensor (AFS) measures the intrinsic fluorescence of aerosols and can be used as a stand-alone instrument or combined with the Aspect Aerosol Size and Shape Analyser (see also ASPECT PLUS in related products tab).

The AFS stand alone version comes complete with an external pump and ASAS+ software.

Biral's Aerosol Fluorescence Sensor (AFS) continuously measures the fluorescence from a volume of aerosol in two detection channels covering the UV and visual spectral bands.

Making the measurement on a volume of aerosol means that there is no limit to the particle size of the material that can be detected.

As well as being compatible with the Aspect aerosol size and shape analyser the AFS can be fitted with an aerosol concentrator for use when the target is dilute.

APPLICATIONS

Measuring intrinsic fluorescence from aerosol particles exposed to UV light has been developed, primarily, as a means of detecting biological weapons. A by-product of the work done in this area has revealed the potential for this technique to be used for other objectives. The most obvious of these is the detection of biological organisms for other purposes such as:

Research into transmission of diseases
Transmission of diseases such as SARS and new strains of flu are obvious examples where aerosols are known to be an important route of infection. Detection of these aerosols, particularly in venues where large numbers of people may be exposed, could be a valuable tool in controlling a potentially devastating pandemic.

Detection of atmospheric pollutants
A number of other components of the atmospheric aerosol, particularly pollutants such as fuel oils and other natural organic materials, also fluoresce. They may often be distinguishable from micro-organisms and other biological materials in terms of the parts of the spectrum in which they fluoresce and the specific intensity of that fluorescence.

The Model NGN-3a is an advanced design integrating polar Nephelometer used for the purpose of accurately measuring the scattering coefficient of dry air. The instrument uses a spiral sampler inlet to separate out particles larger than 2.5 microns to satisfy the PM2.5 standard. In addition, a heated measuring chamber dries the air sample to a preset relative humidity value. A relative humidity sensor is mounted in the sample air chamber. By measuring the scattered light over a 170 degree angle, the scattering extinction coefficient, Bscat, is reduced to units of inverse mega meters. Bmass is computed by applying a conversion factor. Bscat and/or Bmass is made available for output to analog and digital data loggers, PC computers or can be read directly from the integrated LCD display. Time, date, barometric pressure, temperature both inside and outside, RH and other important instrument settings are made available on the serial output for data capture. A unique 4-button keypad allows complete control of the NGN-3a. The keypad allows the initiation of clean air and span calibrations to be made easily. The Model LPV-3 Long Path Visibility Transmissometer consists of a constant output light source transmitter and a computer controlled photometer receiver. The irradiance from the transmitter at a wavelength of 550nm can be measured to a high degree of accuracy both day and night, and over a path length of up to 20 km. Path length is chosen based on the expected extinction values to be measured. A long path of greater than 3 km is used to measure extinction near Rayleigh and a short path of less than 3 km can be used to measure very hazy or foggy conditions.

Both the receiver and transmitter operate from a 13.8-volt battery source and use 4 and 20 watts of power respectively. The output results can be read as a voltage proportional to extinction or visual range. In addition, a separate serial data interface outputs a string of data items in ASCII format that includes all the calculated extinction values, visual range, raw instrument values and time. The units can operate for long periods of time unattended in a continuous or timed cycle mode. The self-resetting and backup systems ensure continued operation even after power blackouts or computer lockup. Both units can be synchronized, programmed and calibrated at the home station and installed in the field ready for operation.

The Biral Aerosol Particle Collector (Biral APC) uses wetted wall cyclone technology to collect
aerosol particles from a large volume of air into a small volume of liquid, to enable direct sample transfer to biological or chemical analysis systems.

The Biral Aerosol Particle Collector can be used for any application where particles are required to be in aqueous suspension for the analysis process.

It is ideally suited for collecting particles of biological origin and also has many applications for the collection of inorganic particles.

It is particularly appropriate to applications that require continuous, time-resolved analysis using automated instruments as it can provide a sample continuously for many hours, limited only by the capacity of the reservoir.

Wetted wall cyclones (WWC) were originally developed as “gentle” samplers for bioaerosols when the normal analysis techniques required the growth of colonies from the collected material. It was found that the WWC retained viability in a much higher proportion of fragile
organisms than other available techniques such as surface impaction. This association with
bioaerosol sampling resulted in its development as a collector for military biodetection systems, although the need to retain viability is often no longer a requirement for modern analysis techniques.

The HI-VOL+ eliminates the need for lengthy calculations during calibration by offering an auto calibration features which requires the user to simply input the calibration factors and the system does the rest. The user must select a flow rate and the unit uses the temperature and barometric pressure to maintain that flow rate with greater than 99% accuracy. The HI-VOL+ also uses a digital timer which allows the user to set their sampling schedule only once and the system will repeat sampling events as frequently as required. A steady flow of liquid is pumped, via a peristoltic pump, through an adjustable discharge rod and over a second rod which discharges compressed air through a small jet. As the liquid flows over the air jet it is nebulized, the aerosolized agent then exits via the top of the nebulizer. The liquid which fails to nebulize falls to the bottom of the nebulizer and is recovered and can be sent to the supply reservoir where it can be reused.
The liquid dispensing rod can be adjusted to maximize nebulization. Input air pressure is normally maintained between 25 and 30 psi but can be increased at user’s discretion. Higher pressures will result in increased nebulization but will at the same time increase droplet diameter. As the pressure is adjusted the positioning of the liquid dispensing tube must also be adjusted.

Electrostatic charge is a large contributor to measurement uncertainty in filter weighing. PTFE filters are especially susceptible to this problem. MTL’s Faraday Pan in tandem with Polonium eliminates the effect of electrostatic forces. A cage surrounds the weighing pan to create an environment where electrostatic charge is nullified and cannot bias readings. It is compatible with METTLER TOLEDO™ and Sartorius™ equipment and can be used with or without MTL’s AH225.

MTL's Faraday pan is made out of brass and dipped in gold to prevent tarnishing. It sits inside the balance and provides a flat surface on which to weigh filters and calibration weights. The same principle of inertial separation is used, but the impaction plate is replaced by a region of relatively stagnant air contained in the cavity of a receiving probe. The fine particles follow the streamlines of the major air flow, while the coarse particles pass into the forward minor flow region. Both particle size groups can, subsequently, be ducted for any desired methods of analysis or collection. This instrument is generally free from particle bounce and re-entrainment that often occurs in other size separating samplers.

Filter Weighing Software (FWS) - MTL has designed a software solution for the weighing of gravimetric filters. The Filter Weighing System will run your entire weighing process. It works with MTL’s Autohandler to manage the life cycle of a filter: everything from the collection of weighing and sampler data, to performing data validation and issuing reports. You will always know exactly what’s going on in your weighing process and be able to recall whatever data you require. The Filter Weighing System also works with a manual weighing system by giving screen prompts on when to load and unload filters.

Environment -The system will monitor your environment and raise flags if environmental conditions fall outside of the administrator-set parameters. If preferred, the system can be set to halt weighing completely in the event of environmental non-compliance. Many laboratories store filters in glass Petri dishes. While such a practice may seem convenient, it can actually have an adverse affect on weighing results. While PTFE is one of the most electronegative materials on the Triboelectric scale, glass is electropositive. The result is a transfer of electrons to the PTFE, causing electrostatic charge problems. MTL has developed a stainless steel storage dish for use in the laboratory to minimize such problems. The dishes have a slot cut into the side to allow for environmental equilibration and to enable a pair of tweezers to easily reach the filter. The BGI MODEL # SSI25 is fabricated exactly to US EPA Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) specifications in terms of Dimensions, Alloy, Heat Treatment and Surface Finish. As required by the regulations it is assembled and verified in the BGI ISO 9000:2008 facility. Only BGI produces a water trap from a solid billet of Aluminum with a high quality glass jar sealed with an “O” ring, not cork which tends to leak. The Chamber is used for the delivery of aerosols to laboratory animals under controlled conditions to assess the toxicity of aerosols or vapors. The Exposure System Control Cabinet controls ten separate functions. Air and vacuum controls allow the user to balance the air flowing into the exposure chamber so as to maintain a net negative pressure in the chamber. The air operated controls are: master air, nebulizer, diluter, and by pass. Vacuum operated functions are: Master vacuum, impactor, filter #1, filter #2, and chamber pressure. With the exception of the master air and master vacuum each of the above controls are associated with a flow meter so that precise flow can be determined. Aldehydes and ketones belong to a class of compounds called carbonyl compounds. The most common carbonyls in air include formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acetone. Carbonyls in air are collected by drawing air through a cartridge impregnated with acidified 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH), which is very reactive toward carbonyls. The Tisch 1-canister Sampler takes air from the inlet on the pump and injects it into the canisters at a constant flow rate for a preset time. The excess air is released through the bypass exhaust. The constant flow rate and elapsed time allow the operator to compute the volume of the integrated air samples. The samples are pumped through a Stainless Steel, Teflon diaphragm, 12 V.D.C. pump, which develop sufficient pressure to control the flow with a Porter regulator. The GK2.69 Cyclone was originally developed as dual use cyclone for both Respirable and Thoracic personal sampling applications. It has significant advantages in both size ranges. As a Thoracic sampler the GK2.69 has been adopted by NIOSH in their Manual of Analytical Methods (NMAM) as part of Standard Number 5524 for sampling airborne concentrations of Metalworking Fluids (MWF). There is no other cyclone available which fulfills the requirements of the method. A stainless steel version has been introduced (below) for any purpose but principally to satisfy the desires of Canadian clients who have a Sulfuric acid sampling requirement.
